The Resource Center on Aging
In October 1985, as part of its new Academic Geriatric Resource Program, the University of California at Berkeley officially opened the Resource Center on Aging. Under the leadership of Guy Micco, MD, Director,
Desi Owens, MS, MSW, LCSW, Academic Coordinator, and Diane Driver, Phd Resource Specialist, the Center is the coordinating mechanism for activities in aging on the UC Berkeley campus, and also serves as a clearinghouse for information on aging activities both on and off campus. It maintains affiliations with organizations in aging which provide resources for field research and current information on issues in aging in the community.
The Center also disseminates information on education, research, grants, publications, fellowships, internships, job opportunities and community resources in aging. We also maintain a small lending library available to students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Research in aging is not conducted through the Center, nor are degrees in gerontology granted through the Center.
The Center is home to the Academic Geriatric Resource Program (AGRP) and is located on campus in 535 University Hall which is on the corner of Oxford and University Aves in Berkeley. We are open by appointment only, Monday through Friday. To make an appointment, please call Desi Owens at (510) 643-6427, FAX, (510) 642-1197, or email desiowens@berkeley.edu

The Academic Geriatric Resource Program
Charged with encouraging and coordinating geriatric training within the University of California system, the Academic Geriatric Resource Program (AGRP) was made possible by California State Assembly Bill 2614 (1984) which allocates funds yearly through the University of California Office of Health Affairs (OHA) for the promotion of high quality and multidisciplinary geriatric training on the six health science campuses of the University of California (Berkeley, Davis, Los Angeles, Irvine, San Diego and San Francisco).
Introduced by Assemblywoman Jean Duffy (Morehead) in 1984, the legislation has funded fellowships, courses, faculty development, and continuing education in aging since 1985. Among the ongoing services at Berkeley which are funded through AGRP are the Resource Center on Aging Web Page, a bi-weekly email newsletter, and the Center Library .
